Plot Summary
The protagonist of the novel is Santiago, a young shepherd who dreams of traveling the world. He has a recurring dream of finding a treasure at the Pyramids of Egypt. In search of this treasure, he sells his sheep and travels to Egypt.

The old man tells Santiago that he has a personal legend, which is his destiny and the reason why he exists. He says that if Santiago follows his personal legend, he will be happy and the universe will conspire to help him.
Santiago sells his sheep and travels to Tangier, where he is robbed by a thief. He finds work at a crystal shop and learns about the culture and religion of the desert. He saves enough money to cross the Sahara, but he decides to continue pursuing his personal legend instead of returning home.
He joins a caravan that is led by an Englishman who is looking for an alchemist.
